Undermining the American Myth through Photography

Theoretically subversive posturing arose in photography shortly after Swiss-born Robert Frank’s trip to America and the images that resulted from his journey there. Frank’s photography undermined the notion of a united and heroic America through the capturing of images that depicted racially divided buses and working class ennui which he juxtaposed to movie premieres. Frank used a variable focus and skewed framing which led in the 1960s to new approaches to photography. The new approaches to photography included instantaneity, perceptive seeking of strange human behaviours, and fortuitous alignments, all entailing a need for a large number of camera transfer cables. Garry Winogrand adopted an ambiguous subject and form in his photography which is extremely difficult to explain. Winogrand one said: “I photograph to find out what the world looks like photographed”.

The director of the Photography Department at the Museum of Modern Art, John Szarkowski, built upon the theoretically subversive work of Winogrand. Szarkowski, though theoretically subversive, articulated a succinct theory of photography which explained itself in terms of production aspects and outcome aspects which were related to all photographers.

Not ready for LED bulbs? You may not have a choice!

Governments are stepping in to save electricity. While they haven’t yet been completely successful in regulating the energy consumption of standard household goods, they have made some serious steps forward. In the next few years, many different countries will limit the power that light bulbs can use. This may mean an end to the incandescent light bulb and LED bulbs are set to take their place.

There has been a lot of debate about whether the government has any place telling us that we have to buy LED bulbs. Even though LED bulbs are getting cheaper, they aren’t likely to reach the rock bottom price of incandescent lights for at least another decade. Of course, LED bulbs are cheaper in the long run because they save on the electric bill – but not all people realize this yet. To help with the conversion to LED bulbs, governments are stepping up standards for labelling incandescent bulbs. Many incandescent bulbs say on their packaging that they cost just 6 pounds per year to run at 12 hours/day. Really, the cost is more like 40 pounds! This realization should help people move towards LED bulbs without needing a law ordering them to do so.

Berlin Lighting

Recently returning from Berlin I was amazed at how little street lighting there was. I do not mean this in a negative way whatsoever, I absolutely loved the city, I actually thought the minimal street lighting was a good thing. Sometimes the amount of street lighting in certain cities is unnecessary, a waste of electricity I think. So long as there is a sufficient amount of light with which to see, I think that’s enough. Wandering around Berlin, I saw the absence of street lighting as a very good thing. I would not be so pleased with the absence of street lighting if all cities employed gu10 led's, however many do not. Indeed, many cities continue to employ incandescent light bulbs which I think is ludicrous!

I wish London would adopt a similar attitude to Berlin on the matter of street lighting. I know street lighting is incredibly important for safety and whatnot, but I also think that so long as there is a sufficient amount, it does not make a massive difference, safety-wise. Let us hope that London either cuts some of its street lights or swaps them all over to LED bulbs.
